had a terrible experience with this rental car company. The car was not in acceptable condition when I picked it up—the gas tank was only 3/4 full, and the exterior was filthy, covered in bird droppings. On top of that, the car lacked basic modern features like CarPlay, which was a huge inconvenience.

The policies were even worse. They charged an extra $10 per day for leaving the state, which is something I’ve never encountered with any other rental company. To make matters worse, they refused to let me use my own insurance, forcing me to purchase theirs instead.

Overall, I found their service, policies, and vehicle quality unacceptable. I definitely would not recommend renting from this company. Save yourself the trouble and go elsewhere.

Our trip to Vermont this holiday season was wonderful. Cornell made the initial experience of getting the vehicle exceptional. I can’t give the company 5 stars because of their policy of $15 dollars per day extra out of the state. We weren’t made aware of this before we booked. Perhaps the website should have asked us where we intended to travel so that we can make educated decisions. The staff was wonderful especially Cornell, but my review gets docked a star for fees that weren’t clear at booking.

Cornell exceeded our expectations. My daughter urgently needed a car rental, but the only available option was at a location in the far Northeast, 15 minutes after closing time. My husband and I called Cornell ahead of time to explain the situation, and he kindly agreed to stay late so we could secure the rental. He was incredibly friendly and helpful throughout the process. Not only did he stay late for pickup, but he also accommodated us again when we faced the same time crunch returning the vehicle. This level of customer service is what makes Payless Car Rental stand out from the competition. Thanks again, Cornell! If we ever need another rental, we know exactly where to go!

Mr. Cornell is a man that is very well with the public. That's in important. This about my third time renting a car and there was time I could see when it has been a busy day for him. He seem tired but still do what his job require. Yesterday October 21 of returning the car it was one of those days. His expertise in dealing with the public is excellent. The company prices is really great!!!!!!!!!!!

Round up the rating for Cornell because he was just that pleasant. He is very understanding, I was on the verge of canceling because of the hidden fees (that I will talk about) and he was helpful with that. I called 5 days later and he picked up the phone and said "Hi John" I was so shocked he remembered my name and phone number after all that time. Really standup guy.

Okay, now to the 2 star review.
Even though you get unlimited miles, if you are leaving the tri state are they slap on a $15 per day fee. I've never heard of this, and it's rather ridiculous. They only do this, so that they can seem like they have the lowest prices, you book online, then on the day of, when you don't really have any options, boom fees that make it the same price as everywhere else, very deceptive. (Oh and don't think about just not telling them. They have GPS in the car and will charge you $0.25 per mile outside the tri-state area.)
Oh also, they don't let you rent it without full compressive insurance. That was gonna be another $150, but luckily my Credit card has rental car insurance.
There was another $3.62 daily surcharge that had no explanation attached to it...

So in short, Cornell is amazing, the company's policies are deceptive and shady. I hope he gets a job at a non shady place because I know he has to deal with a lot of angry people because of the deceptive policies, and it's not his fault, but they will take it out on him.

Very efficient service. Helpful and easy to rent. Cornell was great too! I left my charger in the car and he went out of his way to make sure I got it back. Great service and would use again.

Payless car rental is great, as I go threw problems with my car and needed a rental for an extended period of time Cornell has been wonderful in getting me in and rental and helping when I need to extend. Thanks Cornell for all your hard work and time!
